iPhone 17 Pro Max to have a 48 MP periscope telephoto camera

The iPhone 15 models are barely a few months old and we’ve already had a bunch of iPhone 16 rumors, but wait – today even those are being one-upped since we’re talking about the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Yes, 17. The one launching in fall 2025.

This model, according to Jeff Pu, an analyst who covers companies in Apple’s supply chain, will have a 48 MP telephoto camera, which will somehow be optimized for use with the upcoming Vision Pro headset. He doesn’t unfortunately go into any details about that optimization. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on the Vision Pro starting in iOS 17.2, for what it’s worth.

The iPhone 16 Pro is already expected to come with a 48 MP ultrawide camera, and the iPhone 15 Pro already has a 48 MP main camera, so this means the iPhone 17 Pro/Max may be the first in Apple’s history to come with triple 48 MP cameras on the rear.

Of course, it’s obvious that you should take all of this with a pinch of salt – we are, after all, almost two years ahead of time here. Lots can change in such a long time frame, even if Apple is at this moment actually planning to do everything that’s outlined here. Things come up and force plans to change all the time.
