Houston Astros’ Dusty Baker says ‘nothing is structurally wrong’ with Yordan Alvarez’s injury
The Astros received positive news on whatever is ailing Yordan Alvarez.
Alvarez did not start Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox and was not spotted in the clubhouse prior to the game. Manager Dusty Baker said “nothing is structurally wrong” with Alvarez, but refused to name the body part Alvarez injured during Saturday’s 7-0 loss.
“You know I can’t tell you that,” Baker said. “The opposition will read it.”
Pressed for further information, Baker said “I’ll tell you this, it’s in his hand. The opposition will pitch him differently, which will hurt him and hurt us. This ain’t football. In football, they disclose everything.”
Baker’s comments arrived hours after his ballclub disclosed that utilityman Aledmys Díaz left Saturday’s game with “left shoulder discomfort.” Baker described Alvarez as “day-to-day.”
It is unclear which hand Alvarez injured, how he injured it or what part of it is ailing. Alvarez sat on Sunday as the team’s leading hitter, slashing .311/.403/.623. Earlier this month, the Astros handed him the second-largest contract in franchise history.
In Alvarez’s absence, rookie J.J. Matijevic started on Sunday at designated hitter.
