The western edge of Bed-Stuy is losing yet another beloved bar and community space. On Friday, September 19, Chilo’s announced it would be ending its run at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Clifton Place within the next month or so.
Serving drinks and slinging what has been described as some of the best Mexican food in the neighborhood out of a food truck permanently installed in their yard, the bar—reportedly, at least partially, owned by actor and Clinton Hill resident Michael Cera for some period of time—brought the community together one smoky, aluminum-wrapped alhambra torta at a time. According to a post on Instagram, they’ll pour their last drink and fire their last orders in late October or early November, roughly a year after closing a second location that enjoyed a brief stint across the street from the Greenwood cemetery.
“To everything there is a season and after 10 beautiful years, our season has come to an end. With an extremely heavy heart, we regret to inform you we are left with no choice but to close your favorite neighborhood taco bar,” Chilo’s wrote in a post on Friday morning. “This decision did not come easy, trust us, this is the last thing we ever thought would happen but nothing lasts forever, especially in New York. Thank you for all the laughs, the epic Super Bowl parties, the loyal trivia crowd, and an extra special thanks to all of you who stuck with us from the very beginning. We are deeply sorry we won’t have more time with you.”
And while the days are now numbered, they haven’t run out just yet. So pull up for some agave-laced cocktails, cochinita cooked proper, and/or some candid top-tier people-watching in the yard while you still can. And make sure to stay tuned for whatever blowout they announce in the next few weeks to close this chapter.
